Chantel (she/her)

Coach, Watertown

Chantel learned to use drugs to cope with her trauma at a young age. She’s honored to meet people in the darkness – a place very familiar to her – and show them there is hope.

Coach type: Person with addiction and loved one

Coaching since: 2024

Lived experience:
I grew up in Sisseton, SD and started using drugs with my older cousins when I was 5 years old. I experienced physical, verbal and sexual abuse throughout childhood, and by the time I was 13, I was doing everything I could to escape. I continued the cycle of using, getting in trouble and getting sober but not doing the work for many years. Two years ago, a number of factors came together that allowed me to find not only sobriety, but also recovery. I have my hope in humanity back, and it’s amazing to know that I’m going to be able to help others move out of the darkness.

Professional background:
I’ve worked in a few different industries, including hospitality and manufacturing. In our spare time, my husband and I provide ACEs training throughout the community.

Expertise:
Adverse Childhood Experiences, trauma, foster care and Child Protective Services, incarceration, grief, Drug Court

Interests:
I love being able to be part of my kids’ lives. Going to graduations, all their games – being present for their milestones brings me so much joy. All our kids except one have been involved in CPS to some degree. We still spend time with their foster mom, we spend holidays together – we’re blessed to keep those connections that got our kids through the hardest days of their lives strong.

Woodworking and pretty much anything outside – gardening, fishing, camping, hiking – are huge passions of mine as well.
