Melissa's story

Melissa lost her stepson, Nicholas, to an opioid overdose in 2018. Since then, she's become a fierce advocate for families impacted by addiction. In her interview, Melissa emphasizes the importance of treating addiction with compassion, rather than judgment or tough love.

In the face of her family's tragedy, Melissa knew she had to do something. She began sharing her story, volunteering her time in the Sioux Falls community and anything else that would help families impacted by addiction.

The things Melissa learned about addiction from Face It TOGETHER, including how to approach it with compassion and love, made all the difference in the last few months of Nicholas' life.

"I'm eternally grateful for that," she said. "I don't think I could be doing advocacy, I don't think I could be talking to you, I don't think I could be as well as I am, had it not been for those months I had with him."

We recently had the immense privilege of interviewing five of our members to learn more about their histories, what lightbulb moments they had in recovery and how Face It TOGETHER has helped them along their journeys to wellness. We hope you'll learn from these powerful videos and share them with anyone in need of hope or guidance.
